THIS IS WEEK “B” for bi-weekly members

The farm is a bit chaotic these days, as we carefully study the forecasts and brace for the first frosts. Our peppers and tomatoes managed to survive the first frosty nights, but finally succumbed on Monday. The peppers in the shares this week were harvested on Sunday.

Now we race to get the root crops in from the fields before we get hit with the first hard frost, which could happen at any time…although probably not this week! It’s going to feel more like late summer at the end of the week. Strange.

Esopus Spitzenburg
The flavour is truly aromatic and matches the complexity of the English aromatic apples.  The flesh is a buttery dense yellow, and there is a rich sharpness which is often characteristic of high quality dessert apples.  Eating a Spitzenberg is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

THIS IS WEEK “B” for bi-weekly members

A frost is predicted for mid-week, so enjoy the tender greens and lettuces while you can! Frost makes most of our other greens, like kales, bok choi and broccoli sweeter, so that’s a plus!

Our final week of CSA delivery is the week before Thanksgiving, however, there is a make-up delivery for Wednesday and Thursday groups the following week, on December 4th and 5th. Stay tuned for more details on this and on our a la carte Winter CSA boxes that we will have available to order for select dates through the winter months.

THIS IS WEEK “A” for bi-weekly members

Fall crops are starting to roll in here on the farm.  This week we have the most beautiful cauliflower and the first round of acorn winter squash.

A few notes on the crops... (1) We are getting to the very end of our tomato season, so you may notice a few more imperfections on the fruit as the plants wane. If you find a small rot spot, please just cut it out and enjoy the rest.  We will not have many more to replace them with in the coming weeks.  It's been a wonderful long season of tomatoes, so we're sending out the very last we can find on the plants. (2) Please be sure to wash the arugula gently - submerge in a bowl of water, carefully agitate and spin dry right away.  (3) The acorn squash are not meant to be stored for long.  You can keep them on the counter in a cool spot, but cook within a few days.

THIS IS WEEK “A” for bi-weekly members

There was so much to harvest for the shares this week that we couldn’t even fit it in the box! What a bounty! This is September, the season that brings the best crops in from the fields and puts the pressure on those of us in the kitchen. Preserve the harvest while you can… I’m roasting my peppers and freezing them, making batches of homemade tomato sauce (or in a pinch, freezing tomatoes whole) and pickling the green beans.

Happy cooking, friends!

THIS IS WEEK “A” for bi-weekly members

The tomatoes are continuing to produce nicely! The upcoming forecast calls for warmer than normal temperatures, which these summer crops love!

We’re so excited for our colored peppers this week! You have to have a lot of patience as you watch the peppers grow larger and slowly turn from green to yellow, orange and red over the course of a month. The soils here are amazing and you can see that in the quality of our fruiting crops. Enjoy!

An early sweet-tart variety with a hint of brown sugar.

How to store fruit

Apples are best stored in the fridge.

STORAGE

Store the eggplant in a plastic bag or other airtight container ON THE COUNTER. Use within 3 days. Storing in the fridge can cause cold damage to the eggplant.

Tomatoes should be stored on the counter.

Watermelon should be stored in the fridge along with all other items.

THIS IS WEEK “B” for bi-weekly members

A note on tomatoes… We are sending out tomatoes that are generally a bit under-ripe because they are less likely to damage in transit to you. They will continue to ripen once you get them home. Please leave them out on your counter on a plate or platter until they are a deep red color. At that point, eat them right away! Storing tomatoes in the fridge is a no-no as it takes away their flavor.

This is the final planting of the year for the zucchini and summer squash. This planting is not as prolific, so enjoy them while you can!

And the watermelons we’ve all been waiting for are finally here!

How to store/ripen fruit…

THIS IS WEEK “B” for bi-weekly members

Please see my note about eggplant storage in this newsletter. It should be stored on the counter, not in the fridge where it can get cold damage.

Where are the tomatoes?…. While this cool weather is lovely, it’s not the hot 80’s and 90’s that tomatoes love for ripening. But they are coming along! We had enough for a few groups this week and by next week everyone should be getting cherry tomatoes. Red tomatoes will follow the week after. Please understand that if you don’t receive tomatoes this week, you will be getting them very soon and your group will receive them for an extra week at the end of the season. We keep very careful track of who gets what so it’s always fair!

THIS IS A WEEK “A” for bi-weekly members

This week’s box is amazing!!!! The zucchini and cucumbers are winding down. This is the END of the cucumbers for the season. We do have a later planting of zucchini, but not for another few weeks so you get a good break. (We know you probably need it!)

A note on tomatoes…. The tomatoes are just starting!

We finished up all of our fall transplanting this week. We still have a few more fall crops to direct seed (like the carrots and beets), but that too will be finished before the end of the month.
